On 9th Oct, 2009, we were honoured to have the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra come to our school as part of their Hong Kong Schools Tour.
In the 1-hour mini concert, they played the well-known Chinese Folk tune , "Lift Your Veil", as well as some popular instrumental music, such as "Thunder in a Drought", "Beautiful Clouds Chasing the Moon" and "Horse Race". Some details about these pieces follows:
"Lift Your Veil" was a lighthearted exchange between two lovers.
"Thunder in a Drought" is a very popular piece of Guangdong music that depicts people's joy at the first sight of rain after a long drought.
"Beautiful Clouds Chasing the Moon" is an instrumental piece with distinctively Chinese rhythms and harmonies The plucking of the bass section and the suspended cymbals vividly create the vast, openness of the night sky.
"Horse Race" was first performed in 1964. The music portrays the bustling scene of a Mongolian horse race. At the end various instruments imitate the neighing sound of the horses, keeping the atmosphere even more exciting.
At the concert students had an opportunity to appreciate some of the most popular Chinese folk and traditional instrumental music. While they were enjoying the concert, they learned a lot about Chinese music and all agreed it was a very precious learning experience.
