The Liberal Studies Team was honoured to invite Mr Lam Siu Ching from World Vision to speak to us on Global Poverty. Mr Lam pointed out that fighting poverty is a matter of life and death. The tragic truth is that more than 26,000 children under the age of 5 die every day due to preventable poverty, disease, and hunger, and the gap between the rich and the poor throughout the world is getting wider. In Hong Kong, the gap between the high-income and low-income group also continues to widen. Due to the world financial crisis, it will be even harder for the unskilled workers from poor families to find work. It is expected that in the coming months, more poor people will need to apply to the Food Bank to provide them with their daily food, and to the government for social welfare assistance.
Mr Lam advised us not to waste our food, cherish what we have, and give a helping hand to the needy.
After the talk, students from Form 4E performed a short play giving us the message that no matter whether we are rich or poor, we can help each other when in need. In this way, we can have friendship and enjoy social harmony in the community.
