School Assembly

7th February 2007

Theme of the Month: Making Friends

In this assembly, we learnt about friends: why friends are important to us, what kind of friends we need, and last of all, how to be a good friend.

Friends are special people. They are people we like and have special concern for. We spend a lot of our time with our friends. We don't pick our family, but we pick our friends. Our choice of friends reflects the kind of people we are. On the other hand, our friends can help shape who we are as persons. There is a saying,¡¥Birds of a feather flock together.¡¦Friends always have something in common, like similar character, interests, hobbies, tastes, and even attitudes.

What kind of friends should we have? What qualities do we want from our friends? In the newspaper, we can often read sad news of people being cheated, taken advantage of, and even tempted to commit crimes by their bad friends. So we have to be careful when we make friends, especially ¡¥friends¡¦ we make on the internet.

Friendship which is built upon mutual trust, respect, support and acceptance will last a long time. We need to make our friends feel loved and wanted and show that we care about them. That means that we should support our friends in their chosen paths, but be prepared to advise them against going the wrong way. True friendship means being concerned about what is right for ourselves and our friends, even if it means going against their wishes.
