The theme of this month is 'Using Our Resources Wisely and Feeling Contented'.
The world's resources are limited. Clean water, energy-producing fossil fuels like coal and oil, trees for paper, land which can produce healthy food ¡V all these are going to run out one day if we keep wasting them thoughtlessly as we are at present. There'll be nothing left for our future generations, and the natural environment will become so bad that most living creatures will not be able to survive.
'Waste Not, Want Not' is a good motto. We must cherish our resources and limit our wants. In fact, we need to follow the four R's in conservation, which are:'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rethink'. We all can consider what little things we can do to make the world a better place.
School Assembly (3 January 2007)
In our school assembly, we are honoured to have Dr Grace Poon from Queen Mary Hospital and Mr Ma On Tai, Chairman of Mucopolysaccharidoses and Rare Inherited Diseases Support Group, to speak to us on Mucopolysaccharidoses (ÂH¦hÁÞ¯g). We are also very happy to have Mrs Yeung to join us in the assembly with her two child patients, Yeung Tak Chun, and his sister, Yeung Hiu Dan, to tell us how they cope with the disorder. They are accompanied by the Mucopolysaccharidoses Ambassadors, artists Mandy Chiang and Don Lee, who have helped to appeal to students to buy the book written by children suffering from this condition.
Patients with Mucopolysaccharidoses either do not produce enough of one of the 11 enzymes required to break down sugar into proteins, or they produce enzymes that do not work properly.
The children identifed with this disorder can't grow normally.
At present, there is no cure for Mucopolysaccharidoses. There are enzymes replacement therapies in use, but the cost is huge. So the children suffering from it need our contributions very much. We can show our kindness by simply buying a book written by the Mucopolysaccharidoses children, to help improve the quality of their lives.
