School Assembly (China Month) 9 October 2006

This month, we celebrated the 57th Anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, by organizing a series of activities to promote awareness of national identity and national education. To enable students to learn more about our motherland, there were morning talks, slide shows, a board display of modern Chinese history, a questionnaire on national identity, knowledge quizzes, and an experience sharing session by students who joined educational tours to Beijing during the last academic year.

The whole school first gathered early in the morning, in the playground, to witness the solemn ceremony of the raising of the National Flag. In the afternoon assembly, students were given a talk on the deeper meanings of China's National Flag, Emblem and Anthem as symbols of a country, representing its sovereignty and dignity.

Students who had been selected to join the educational tour, sponsored by the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research and the Hong Kong Jockey Club, during the last academic year, showed slides to the assembly of the places they visited, and what attracted them most in Beijing. They all agreed that their tour was both unforgettable and touching. They enjoyed visiting the beautiful historical sites and places of interest, listening to talks given to them by the organizer, meeting and talking to the local people, shopping, and having fun.

In the assembly, the students also had an exciting time having a quiz about China and getting prizes. They were told that they should try to learn more about China, and get ready for this year's inter-school competitions, so that they can win a free or subsidized tour to China.
